On March 11, 2024, the Laureates and Leaders for Children hosted its Conclave, “Creating a Compassionate World for Children,” in New Delhi. This gathering marked a continuation of the vital work of Laureates and Leaders for Children, bringing together Nobel Laureates and global leaders to foster a more compassionate world.
During the event, our Founder, Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, introduced the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion (SMGC). Born out of four decades of Mr. Satyarthi’s revolutionary and path-breaking endeavors as a social reformer, SMGC aims to unite the fractured world through compassion in action. In fact, compassion has been the driving force behind some of the unique models, including Bal Ashram, Banjara Education Centres, Bal Mitra Mandal and Bal Mitra Gram, implemented across the country.
The Conclave facilitated thought-provoking discussions with eminent speakers, including Nobel Peace Laureates Kailash Satyarthi and Jody Williams; HE Serge Telle, Former Prime Minister of Monaco; Padma Vibhushan Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar, Former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR); Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights; Lelio Bentes Corrêa, Chief Justice of the Superior Labour Court of Brazil; and former Indian Supreme Court Judges Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Indira Bannerjee. The day-long event explored how a more compassionate world could be created by leaders from judiciary, faith, businesses, governance, education, and healthcare.
Launched with songs, joy, and a powerful sense of hope, SMGC seeks to reform global governance through compassionate dialogue and action. It aims to establish democratic, inclusive, and dynamic institutions with compassionate leadership. Additionally, SMGC will build Compassionate Communities to promote inclusion, equity, and social protection through youth leadership.
Mr. Satyarthi addressed the gathering with a profound message: “Today, the world is wealthier and more interconnected than ever before. Yet, it is severely fractured and reeling from war, growing inequalities, hatred, climate crisis, and potential threats of artificial intelligence. Children are always the worst sufferers. The UN Sustainable Development Goals have been derailed. Despite unprecedented wealth, resources, and knowledge, why do these problems persist? Institutions like the United Nations, governments, and philanthropists have all gravely fallen short of uniting the world to end injustice and inequality.
For decades, I have called for the globalisation of compassion. Today, we take the next step in this mission with the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion. Through this movement, I offer you hope. If our world is broken, we know that once, it was whole. I call on each of you to recognize that spark of compassion in you and join the global movement, for it is compassion that will unite our broken world.”
The launch of the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion is a beacon of hope in these troubled times, striving to harness the power of collective compassion to create a brighter future for all, especially for the world’s most vulnerable children.
